Mechanical damage and vehicle valuation
Engine breakdowns: origin and mechanical causes
Expert assessment of engine breakdowns: technical cause, manufacturing defect, maintenance and compatibility with the normal use of the vehicle.
Engine breakdowns are one of the most costly and frequently disputed mechanical losses. When the owner disputes the shop’s diagnosis, the brand denies the warranty or the insurer refuses to cover the damage, an independent expert report provides technical judgment.
The expert report is not limited to describing the failure: it analyzes its probable cause, its relationship with the use of the vehicle and its compatibility with the maintenance performed.
Common situations
- Broken timing belt or chain.
- Failure of segments, cylinders or cylinder head.
- Breakdowns due to overheating.
- Breakage of connecting rods or crankshaft.
- Excessive consumption of oil or coolant.
- Premature failure after an intervention in the workshop.
What is analyzed
- Symptoms and evolution of the fault.
- Maintenance documentation and oil changes.
- Kilometers traveled and regular use.
- History of previous repairs.
- Repair orders and workshop budgets.
- Direct engine inspection when possible.
Probable origin
Distinguishing the origin of the failure is essential:
- Recognizable manufacturing defect in several vehicles of the same model.
- Maintenance failure attributable to the owner.
- Error in a previous workshop intervention.
- Incorrect or abusive use of the vehicle.
- Natural fatigue of the component in the mileage achieved.
Each case leads to a different claim route: warranty, workshop, insurer or assumption by the owner.
Maintenance and guarantees
The legal and commercial guarantee require maintenance requirements. The report reviews:
- Compliance with brand deadlines.
- Use of appropriate lubricants and spare parts.
- Existence of invoices and sealing of the maintenance book.
- Age of the vehicle and mileage.
Correct maintenance reinforces the claim; Poor maintenance can weaken it, although it does not always exempt the brand or the workshop.
Useful documentation
- Vehicle technical sheet.
- Complete maintenance history.
- Repair orders for the current fault.
- Estimated repair quotation.
- Photographs and videos of the symptoms.
- Communications with workshop or brand.
When is a report appropriate?
- When the workshop attributes the breakdown to “lack of maintenance” without clear basis.
- When the brand denies the warranty and the vehicle is not old.
- When there is a known history of failure in that model.
- When the insurer refuses to cover the fault.
Coordination with lawyer
Claims for legal, commercial or recovery guarantee for hidden defects have deadlines and formal requirements. Coordination with a lawyer allows the report to be oriented to legally relevant issues.
Limits
The report determines the most probable technical cause. It does not decide the procedural route or set compensation. It provides the technical basis on which the claim is built.
